What are the most common materials used in outdoor construction projects?
Outdoor construction projects typically require base materials like crushed rock or road base, followed by sand, cement and aggregates, depending on the structure being built. For example, a patio may require compacted crushed rock beneath pavers, with washed sand for bedding. Concrete work often uses a mix of cement, sand and gravel. Retaining walls may require drainage gravel and backfill materials. Choosing the right type for each layer is key to creating a stable, long-lasting result that handles weight and weather well.
What is road base, and where is it used?
Road base is a compactable material made from a blend of crushed rock, fines and dust. It forms a solid foundation and is commonly used under driveways, footpaths, garden sheds and paved areas. Its ability to lock together when compacted makes it ideal for supporting heavy loads and reducing movement. It can be laid directly onto level ground or combined with other layers depending on drainage or structural needs. Proper installation—including compaction—is essential to get the full benefit of road base.
How much building material do I need for my project?
To estimate how much material you’ll need, you’ll first need to calculate the volume of the area—Length x Width x Depth (in metres) = Cubic Metres. For instance, a 5m x 3m area at 10cm depth (0.1m) equals 1.5 cubic metres. Material requirements can vary based on compaction, coverage thickness or intended use. Most suppliers provide guides for typical applications, and it’s often a good idea to order slightly more to allow for settling or uneven ground.
