Reliable Products for Practical Projects
Not all sand and gravel is the same. Coarse river gravel is perfect for drainage and base layers, while washed sand is ideal for laying pavers or turf. Crushed rock and aggregates provide structure for concrete or driveways, while fine sand can be used for mortar or levelling.
With the right material, your job becomes smoother, faster and more durable, whether you’re working on a garden path, retaining wall or kids' sandpit. Choosing based on purpose saves time and money down the track, and ensures your finished result holds up long after the project’s done.
We’re here to take the guesswork out of it. Give us a call and we’ll help you match your needs to the right product.
What type of sand is best for paving or laying bricks?
When laying bricks or pavers, the best sand to use is typically a coarse, washed sand often referred to as paving sand or river sand. This type of sand has larger grains that lock together well, creating a stable base that resists shifting and allows for proper drainage. Avoid using fine sands, like play sand or beach sand, as they can compact too tightly and lead to water retention or instability. If you’re also mixing mortar, a clean, fine-washed sand may be better suited for a smooth finish.
What is the difference between crushed rock and gravel?
Crushed rock is mechanically broken down from larger stones and has angular, sharp edges that interlock well, making it ideal for structural uses like driveways, road bases and under concrete slabs. Gravel, on the other hand, tends to be naturally weathered and rounded, often sourced from riverbeds. It’s more commonly used for drainage, decorative features or garden pathways. Crushed rock offers better compaction and stability, while gravel provides smoother surfaces and improved water flow.
How much sand or gravel do I need for my project?
To calculate how much you’ll need, measure the length, width and depth of your project area in metres. Multiply these together to find the cubic metres required (Length x Width x Depth). For example, a 5m x 2m area at 0.1m deep equals 1 cubic metre of material. As a rough guide, 1 cubic metre of sand or gravel covers about 10 square metres at 10cm deep. Always allow a little extra for compaction or uneven surfaces. Most suppliers can help you check your quantities before ordering.
