Better Garden Health Starts Here
The beauty of mulch and bark is that they work hard in the background. Organic mulches, like pine bark, wood chips and leaf mulch, gradually break down, feeding your soil and improving structure.
Inorganic options such as coloured wood chips or decorative bark offer long-lasting ground cover with a clean, low-maintenance finish. Each type has its own benefits depending on your garden’s layout, plant selection and water needs.
Whether you’re protecting young plants, tidying up borders or creating contrast in your landscape design, the right mulch can enhance both function and appearance with very little effort.

What is the best mulch for vegetable gardens?
Vegetable gardens benefit most from organic mulches that break down quickly and enrich the soil. Sugar cane mulch, lucerne mulch and straw are all great choices. They’re lightweight, easy to spread and improve soil quality as they decompose. These types of mulch help retain moisture, reduce weed growth and keep soil temperatures stable, creating ideal growing conditions for veggies. Avoid treated wood mulches or bark chips, as they break down slowly and may contain substances not suitable for edible plants.
How thick should mulch be spread in garden beds?
For most garden beds, a mulch layer of 5–10 cm (2–4 inches) is recommended. This is thick enough to block sunlight from reaching weeds, retain soil moisture and regulate soil temperature. Thinner layers may dry out too quickly or allow weeds to push through, while excessively thick mulch can restrict airflow and lead to root rot or fungus. Leave a small gap around plant stems and trunks to prevent mould and promote healthy airflow.
What’s the difference between bark and mulch?
Bark and mulch are often used interchangeably, but there are differences. Bark usually refers to larger, chunkier pieces stripped from trees, and it tends to break down more slowly, making it ideal for decorative beds or low-maintenance areas. Mulch, on the other hand, includes a wider range of materials such as shredded wood, straw, leaves or composted organics, and it often breaks down faster. While both serve similar functions, bark is better for long-term visual appeal, while mulch is more beneficial for soil enrichment.
