What are the best materials to use for garden beds?
The most commonly used materials for garden beds are mulch, compost, topsoil and decorative edging like timber or stone. Mulch helps retain moisture, suppress weeds and regulate soil temperature. Compost improves soil health by adding nutrients, while topsoil provides a base layer for planting. For aesthetics and durability, materials like bark, gravel or stone can also be used on the surface. The best combination depends on your climate, soil type and what you're planting—veggies, shrubs or flowers may each require different approaches.
How much gravel or mulch do I need for my project?
To work this out, you’ll need to calculate the area (length x width) and the desired depth of coverage. A general guide is that 1 cubic metre of mulch or gravel will cover 10 square metres at a depth of 100mm. If you’re spreading mulch more thinly for decorative purposes, you may need less. For heavier-use areas, like pathways or driveways, a thicker base is usually required. Most landscape supply businesses can help you calculate exactly how much you’ll need based on your measurements.
What’s the difference between topsoil and garden soil?
Topsoil is the uppermost layer of natural soil and is generally used as a base layer for lawns or to level areas. Garden soil, on the other hand, is topsoil that’s been enriched with organic matter like compost, manure or nutrients to support plant growth. While topsoil is good for foundational layers or filling areas, garden soil is better suited to planting and growing vegetables, flowers or shrubs because of its higher nutrient content and improved texture.
